Can I have a homebirth in Milton Keynes?
Interpreting Guidance & Your Right to Choose
Short Answer – Yes!
In the UK, it is your right to choose where you give birth, but this isn’t always clear when looking at the guidance for your local trust.
Milton Keynes no longer have a homebirth team, but you can still have a homebirth – and you don’t have to be “perfectly low risk” to do so! It’s important to remember that even if you have “risk factors”, it is your right to choose where you give birth. That doesn’t mean that choosing a homebirth would be dangerous for you, just that there are other factors to consider; the Maternity Services team should work with you to make a plan that works for you, that allows you to give birth in an environment where you are comfortable.
Birthing “outside of guidelines” sounds scary, but women do it all the time for so many different reasons. What’s important is that you’re listened to, supported, and making an informed choice that is right for you.
“Healthcare professionals may want to talk to you about your plans and any concerns they have. This should be an opportunity to have an open discussion and to share information. They should always respect your views and choices.”

Facts and Statistics
The MKUH Homebirth Team was disbanded in 2022 – but you can still have a homebirth in Milton Keynes! Talk to your Community Midwife or Consultant about your choice to birth at home.
Studies have shown that birthing at home with a midwife is as safe as birthing in hospital for most women, and comes with a reduced risk of interventions such as instrumental deliveries or complications such as infections.
Indeed, for women without “risk factors”, giving birth in hospital “may lead to more interventions, more complications, and more neonatal problems.”
MKUH’s homebirth rates are almost half the national average; you may need to advocate for your rights by speaking to the Head of Midwifery or through PALS.
Choosing where to birth can also include a different hospital, or a Midwife Led Birth Centre that is not under your local trust like Bedford, Stoke Mandeville, or Northampton, if you feel this is right for you.
If you are birthing in an environment where you feel safe and relaxed, this increases your chances of a positive birth experience!
