Pre-2023: My Journey to Radical Birthkeeping

So, why should you choose me to support you? The main reason is if something about me connects with you, and you feel I am the right fit. There’s a lot to be said for trusting your gut! Of course, it’s understandable to want to see proof that I have the experience I say I do. That’s what this page is for.

I have been doing birth work in various capacities since 2015. After having my son, I was surrounded by women talking about their experiences with pregnancy, birth, and new motherhood. It felt raw, and real, and lit a fire in me. Why did so many of us feel so unsupported? Why were so many women feeling helpless about their own bodies and births on the NHS Maternity conveyor belt? I needed to know more, and I knew women deserved better.

Peer Supporting (2015-2019)

I started out as a babywearing peer supporter, helping women utilise wraps, slings, and baby carriers to build their bond and connection with their babies (and regain the use of both hands!). After moving back to North Buckinghamshire, I trained as a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter under Ros McFadden (IBCLC) and started volunteering at Milton Keynes University Hospital’s postnatal ward as both a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter and Maternity Support Worker.

Doula & Student Midwife (2018-2020)

While waiting to start my Midwifery degree, I continued volunteering and supporting women postnatally. While studying Midwifery, I realised where my heart truly lay: antenatal education, and supporting women emotionally on their journeys. The medicalised model of obstetric care that is too often the default under the NHS leads to cascading interventions, and it hurt my heart to witness it day-in, day-out.

I left Midwifery and took some time out to heal in 2020; the most heart-wrenching decision of my life so far. But supporting women in a non-medical capacity through their birth experiences, talking to pregnant friends about their antenatal journeys, and even providing emotional support to women struggling on wards through painful postnatal medical procedures made me sure I was in the right place: in a non-medical role, giving all of myself to these women in service of their journeys.
